What is hypospadias?
Hypospadias is the opening of the urethra (urinary duct) not at the tip of the penis, but on the lower surface, originating from the head. It may be accompanied by curvature in the shape of the penis and abnormal distribution of the foreskin.
Causes
It is a developmental (embryonic) disorder; It cannot be attributed to a single reason. The frequency may increase in cases with a family history.
Treatment
Treatment is surgery. The ideal age is usually between 6 and 18 months. With surgery, the urethra is reconstructed and the penis is straightened. Single or staged surgeries may be required; Follow-up should be long-term.
Consulting a pediatric urologist at an early stage is important for the surgery plan and outcome.
