intussusception

  • Intussusception is a condition in which the intestines intertwine. If surgery is not performed under emergency conditions, intestinal obstruction, bleeding, disruption of intestinal blood flow and damage to the intestine may occur. causes puncture. It is the most common cause of intestinal obstruction in the 3 month-3 age group. It is usually idiopathic (develops without any known cause). Apart from this, it may be most commonly due to a protrusion in the small intestine (Meckel's diverticulum), which can be found in some people.
  • The diagnosis is made by abdominal ultrasonography for a child who complains of abdominal pain, vomiting, and bloody poop. At Göztepe Pediatric Surgery Clinic, the diagnosis of intussusception is made without delay.
  • In early cases, treatment can be tried by administering fluid or air rectally under the guidance of ultrasonography. The fact that the administered substance opens the intertwined intestine and moves beyond the obstruction indicates that the treatment has been successful. If this method is not successful, surgery is necessary. If surgery is not performed, the blood supply to the intestine may be impaired and it may perforate.
  • The abdomen is entered through an incision made on the upper right side of the navel, and the nested intestine is found and opened. If there is a part of the intestine with impaired blood supply, this part is removed and the ends are stitched together. All kinds of treatment methods are applied successfully in Göztepe Pediatric Surgery Clinic.
  • WHAT AWAITS US AFTER THE SURGERY?
  • After the surgery, the patient is followed up in the Pediatric Surgery service. He comes out of surgery with a catheter extending from his nose to his stomach. If it is not necessary to remove the intestine, the nasal catheter is removed the next day after the surgery and the patient is fed. If the bowel is removed and repaired, this process takes longer.
  • Swelling may occur in the surgical area after the surgery. This situation is temporary.
  • Bleeding or blood accumulation (hematoma) may occur in the surgery area.
  • The surgery area may become infected (germs).
  • A hernia may develop from the surgery site.
  • The intestines may become intertwined again after the surgery.
  • If anastomosis (sewing the intestines together) was performed, there may be a leak from here. A thin connection (fistula) may develop from this line to the skin. Therefore, repeat surgery may be required.
  • Intestinal adhesion may develop due to surgery. In this case, hospitalization and surgery may be required.
